Plan your visit

  • Bring layers

Volcano Village sits around 3,700 feet up, so it is cooler and wetter than the coast. A light rain jacket earns its place.

  • Start early

Mornings usually give clearer views and quieter trails, and leave the afternoon free for the hot tub.

  • Wear sturdy shoes

Lava rock is sharp and uneven. Closed-toe shoes with grip make every walk easier.

  • Carry water and snacks

Most trails and overlooks have no shops nearby, so pack what you need for the day.

Check conditions before you go

Kīlauea is an active volcano, so trail access, viewing areas and air quality can change from day to day. Look at the official updates the morning you head out.
